Someone sitting next to [Berlioz] in the theatre who, noticing his sobbing during the performance of one of Beethoven’s symphonies, said kindly, “You seem to be greatly affected, monsieur. Had not you better retire for a while?

Berlioz replied brusquely, “Are you under the impression that I am here to enjoy myself?”
