In the background

While writing the above post, I listened to Drummer and his guitarist friend (I’ll call him Nevermind) compose music in the basement. It was fascinating to hear how they created. They’d go through periods where they just messed around–Drummer tapping different beats, Nevermind playing a slice of Nirvana one minute, something original the next. Then Nevermind would hit on a guitar riff and he’d repeat it a few times. Drummer might or might not add a beat. They stopped and started. Every so often, Drummer gave a beat first, and Nevermind would jump in. Eventually, guitarist and drummer found a combination that worked, and they explored it a while, making slight changes as they played it again and again. Lastly, they’d tape it for future use, and then the process would begin once more.
