I’ve been converted to Hyde-ism

Don’t be too shocked if in the future you find me screaming and sobbing in the front row of a J-rock concert.

L’Arc~en~Ciel image from geocities.com It happened like this. My 16-yr-old daughter, Ikuni, fell in love with the godlike Japanese singer/composer Gackt. Her obsession had us combing three different Hollywood Videos to find his film, Moon Child, which also costarred the lead singer, Hyde, of the Japanese band with a French name that sounds German, L’Arc~en~Ciel (Hyde is second from the left in the pic above).

Then with her birthday money, Ikuni bought L’Arc~en~Ciel’s 2004 CD, Smile, along with their USA concert DVD. I listened. I watched. I melted. And since then my burned copy of Smile has not left my CD player, and I’ve watched the concert multiple times (which is great, despite Hyde struggling with pitch now and then).

I must admit, for a while there I felt a bit perverted, thinking I was drooling over someone who was teething when I was in college. Hyde looks so young. I was surprised and relieved, though, to discover he’s only six years my junior. Amazing. So—

Do I care if some people think I’m silly?
No, because he’s gorgeous and I love his voice.

Do I care if one song of L'Arc's songs is titled Ready Steady Go?
No, because he’s gorgeous and I love his voice.

Do I care if he’s almost a half foot shorter than me and married to a beautiful woman?
Well, yeah. But, there’s nothing I can do about either of those.

And don’t get me wrong. I do appreciate the lyrical content of L’Arc~en~Ciel’s songs (at least, what I know of it; I’m still working on getting Japanese translations), and I think their musicianship is very good (for instance, it’s refreshing to hear a drummer whose style reminds me sometimes of Neil Peart). But, when it comes down to it, I simply adore Hyde’s voice. He could sing anything and it would be fine with me. I also adore the way he looks and the way he moves and…am I going through a midlife crisis here? Probably. But, do I care? Nope, because he’s gorgeous and I love his voice.
