Life is Beautiful

The day started with me running late for work, because I’d forgotten Ikuni had to have hairnets for an afternoon rehearsal. I called my manager and let her know I’d be in by about eight-thirty then I went to tell Ikuni that I’d be right back with the nets.

Passing the front door on the way to her room, I looked out the sidelight. It had rained the night before, and the clouds still hung low in the sky. A plane soared high above them.

Driving to the store, I put in my copy of favorite Amy Correia songs from her CD, Carnival Love. I’ve just started listening to it again. Carnival Love was on constant replay the month my ex walked out. That was over two years ago, and I haven’t had the heart to listen to it again until recently.

As I drove and Amy sang, I glanced from time to time at the blue/gray clouds, the tops of which were now strikingly lit by the morning sun. I picked up my purchase, headed back home, and there in the sky–a rainbow.

I met Ikuni at the back door, dropped off the nets then made my way to the expressway. The song, “Life is Beautiful,” was playing. The music seemed to heighten my experience of the world around me even more. The wet grass on both sides of the road was beaded with sunshine, and as I gained speed, the water drops on my windshield glistened as they rolled upward. The sun’s rays poured onto the pavement, mist rose on the hillside, and a group of birds flew straight toward me then glided to my right as they passed over. I thought, stop, stop. It’s almost too much. Almost too beautiful.

But, as soon as the song ended, I played it again. Life can be so painful, sometimes. When it’s not, you might as well embrace it fully.

 Life is Beautiful

by Amy Correia

Innocent I was born a queen
Woke to life I thought it was a dream
I was lying in the gutter when a hand unseen
Poured down the sun on New York City

I went sailing through the streets
On a sea of faces
I was just another person
That time erases
It was All Soul’s Day and I was not afraid
I felt I had a reason to live that day

And it seemed to me that something good
Is coming if you think it could
And I don’t know when
and I don’t know how
But I put my head into the clouds
And it’s beautiful…
Life is

Now I’m flying over bridges
And the sun’s in my eyes
Skyscrapers shining and trains roll by
I thought I saw myself among the passersby
We’re walking on the water
Walking on the light

And it seemed to me that something good
Is coming if you think it could
And I don’t know when
and I don’t know how
But I put my head into the clouds
And it’s beautiful…
Life is
