What’s it going to cost me?

I’ve been listening to the audio book, The Corrections, by Jonathan Franzen. One of the main characters is asked:

“Say somebody offered you a new personality. Would you take it? Say somebody said to you, ‘I will permanently rewire your mental hardware in whatever way you want.’ Would you pay to have that done?”

I’ve been mulling this over for a few days. Years ago, my immediate answer would have been yes, give me a complete overhaul. Since then I’ve come to accept who I am a bit more, so I don’t think I’d change my basic personality. Still, I wouldn’t mind it being tweaked here and there. It might be nice to be a little more outgoing, a little less self conscious, and, oh, how wonderful to have my brain wired so I could remember everything I've read!

What about you? Would you change your personality or mental hardwire?

  1. what an interesting question. I’m preety happy with my personality but I would definitely pay to rewire the mental hardware. Fix the memory chip and lube the connectors that control moods to eliminate the dark ones.

  2. If I could change one thing about myself it would be my inability to let go of what or whom I have lost. And I don’t mean to be like “Oh, well glad she’s/he’s gone! Whoo-hoo!” I would want to have my mourning period for that person, or thing, or part of myself that I have lost. To be able to be sad or lonely but to then be able to put it away and let go.

  3. That is an interesting question. I think I’d mostly keep myself the same, but wire a slower trigger to my temper.

  4. Great question. One thing I’d let go is “worrying”. I hate worrying because after all it’s usually about things you have no control over anyway. Waste of time but I can’t seem to stop it.

  5. I’m going to think about that one, very good question. Thanks for visiting my blog. When I saw your description of yourself I thought I could have written the same about me! Looking forward to coming back!
